MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Sunday expressed concern over ongoing developments in Syria, urging all parties involved to exercise restraint and prevent further harm to civilians.

This followed reports that the 50-year reign of the Assad-led Syrian government fell on Sunday morning, following a rapid 10-day advance by rebels who seized control of government-held territories and entered the capital.

“The Philippines calls on all concerned parties to exercise restraint and refrain from further violence, to avert further casualties and deaths of civilians,” the DFA said in a statement.

The department also expressed its concern for the safety and welfare of Filipinos in Syria and advised them to remain vigilant.

“We express concern regarding the situation of our Filipinos in Syria and advise them to take the necessary precautions and stay in contact with the Philippine Embassy in Damascus,” the DFA added.

The DFA is closely monitoring developments in Syria and has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of Filipinos residing in the region.
