MANILAtamabet, Philippines — As Christmas approaches, senators urge employers to fulfill their moral and legal duty to pay the 13th month pay on time, while reflecting on the nation’s resilience in overcoming the challenges of 2024.

In a statement on Christmas Eve, Senate President Chiz Escudero said the joyous occasion reminds him of the boundless love and hope that the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ brings to humanity.

“As we reflect on the challenges we faced in 2024, including the numerous natural calamities that battered our nation, we also celebrate the resilience and unity of the Filipino people,” he said.

In a statement, Estrada said that it is not only a legal obligation but also a moral duty for employers to ensure the timely payment of the 13th month pay to their employees by the deadline set by law — Dec. 24.

But oil prices fell as markets were unimpressed with a pledge by China’s finance minister to boost the world’s second-biggest economy.

“As a moral obligation, our workforce deserves recognition for their hard work and dedication to their jobs,” said Estrada.

“Not adhering to this requirement could lead to significant legal repercussions, such as administrative penalties or criminal charges. Let’s commit to fairness and justice by meeting our obligations to our employees and supporting their well-being this holiday season,” he emphasized.
